tuesday with morrie英文读后感,原文标题:英文演讲——介绍令我感触很深的一本书《Tuesdays with Morrie》。

Hello,everyone!

Before we begin, I'd like to ask you to think about a question seriously : is the life today really what you want it to be?

// take sth seriously 重视,认真对待某事

Most of the people spend their days doing meaningless things, busy but unfocused, without knowing where they want to go. There may be times when they stop and wonder if what they're doing makes sense, but then they will move on.

And the reason why they doing this is that they don't really understand the life.

So today I'd like to recommend Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie. And after reading it, you will have a better understanding of what life is and how to live it.

This book is based on a true story.

The main character of the story is Morrie, an elderly professor of social psychology. He is so wise that he could always see into people's deep hearts.

In his seventies, he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and was pronounced a death sentence by his doctor. The disease bit by bit deprived him of his basic living ability, but it didn't take away his optimism. He didn't think it was a big deal and went on enjoying his life.

Another hero of the story Mitch who is also the narrator of this story is the old professor's star pupil.

Morrie was Mitch's favorite professor when he was an undergraduate at Brandeis. They often talked and ate together. Morrie cared about Mitch like a father, but Mitch didn't contact Morrie for seventeen years after he graduated from college.

For 17 years, Mitch has become a workaholic, obsessed with success. It was only when he happened to see the aged Morrie again on the evening channel one day that he learned Morrie was ill and decided to pay a visit to him.

When the old professor saw that the once high-spirited young man has been completely polished by life, and although he seemed to be living a good life, he still felt confused about life inside, he desided to use his last moments to give Mitch a present——give him a compulsory course called life. It happened once a week which was on Tuesday.

// compulsory course 必修课

Every Tuesday after that, Mitch flew seven hundred kilometers to the old professor's home for classes. Later, after the old man passed away, the experience of Tuesdays with Morrie was recorded by Mitch, who gave the precious gift to readers around the world.

In his last days, the old professor gave Mitch 14 lessons. It covers almost every part of life: the world, love and fear, money and culture… And even how to deal with old age and death. And the last class was the funeral of the old professor. For 14 classes, there were no credits, no tests, no lesson preparation, and the only assignment was to write down what he said. It was more like a heart-to-heart exchange between an old man approaching the end of his life and a confused young man than a course.

Every aspect of the topics they talked about shook my heart and made me rethink my life and everything now. Here I would like to share three aspects that impressed me most.

First: Talk about death.

——Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.

Morrie suffered amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a deadly, relentless neurological disease that can lead to death by choking on oxygen to the lungs.

The brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking has the same condition, which leaves a hole in his throat, He requires the help of a computer synthesizer to speak, and a sensor to take notes based on changes in his blinking eyes.

tuesday with morrie英文读后感(tuesdays with morrie英文读后感)

Hawking is admirable, but this is not the way Morrie chose to live his life. To him, being alive meant being able to communicate, and when that was gone, so should he.

While Mitch was heartbroken by his teacher's illness, Morrie was more optimistic and told Mitch that he was lucky because not everyone had the chance to say goodbye to the world, and that he was ready to say goodbye whenever he wanted.

"Knowing you're going to die and being prepared for it makes you appreciate life more while you're alive." ,he told Mitch. But everyone knew they were going to die, and no one wanted to believe it, including him before he got sick.

This is because most of us live in dreams and don't really experience the world. We are in a state of unconsciousness, doing what we think we should. But only by brushing away the dust of the exterior can we see the true meaning of life. When you realize you're going to die, you look at things differently.Work will then seem less important, perhaps we will free up more time and energy to satisfy spiritual needs.

"Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live." This is Morrie's thinking about life and death after his illness. He worried that Mitch wouldn't understand, so he went on to explain:“We pursue material needs too much, but they do not satisfy us. We lost sight of loving relationships. We lost sight of the world around us." Morrie was speaking to Mitch, and also to all of us young people. Everyone knows about death, but they never really deal with life. Only by facing death can we find the mission of life and do something more meaningful.

Second:Talk about aging

——"If you're always battling against getting older, you're always going to be unhappy, because it will happen anyhow."

tuesday with morrie英文读后感(tuesdays with morrie英文读后感)

Morrie was getting weaker and weaker, and even private matters such as wiping his ass needed to be done for him. But instead of being embarrassed, Morrie was optimistic, saying it made him feel like he was a baby again.

Morrie takes a more unique view of age, saying that aging is not just decay, it's growth.

People's desire to be younger is a reflection of their own dissatisfaction, inadequacy, and meaninglessness in their life, because once you find meaning in your life, you don't want to go back, you want to move forward, see more, do more, and have the experience of being 65.

Morrie said that all the young people should learn this philosophy that if you're always battling against getting older, you're always going to be unhappy, because it will happen anyhow.

The best thing you are supposed to do is to accept the situation and enjoy it. Delight in being a child when it's appropriate to be a child and delight in being a wise old man when it's appropriate to be a wise old man. Willing to accept all the rights of nature. Understand that we belong to any age, up to where we are now.Only in this way can we not envy other people's life stage, because we also have this life stage.

Third:Talk about the "Perfect Day" :

——Make peace with life.

tuesday with morrie英文读后感(tuesdays with morrie英文读后感)

Mitch asked the teacher, if you had a perfectly healthy day, what would you do?

Morrie thought for a moment and said: "Lets see… I'd get up in the morning,do my exercises, have a lovely breakfast of sweet rolls and tea. go for a swim, then have my friends come over for a nice lunch.I'd have them come one or two at a time so we could talk about their families, their issues, talk about how much we mean to each other. Then I'd like to go for a walk,in a garden with some trees, watch their colors, watch the birds, take in the nature that I haven't seen in so long now. In the evening,we'd all go together to a restaurant with some great pasta, maybe some duck. In love duckand then we'd dance the rest of the night.I'd dance with all the wonderful dance partners out there, until I was exhausted. And then I'd go home and have a deep, wonderful sleep.”

It was so simple. So average. Mitch was actually a little disappointed. He figured he'd fly to Italy or have lunch with the President or romp on the seashore or try every exotic thing he could think of. After all these months, lying there, unable to move a leg or a foot-how could he find perfection in such an average day?

Then Mitch realized this was the whole point.

I think I'm also aware of the point. When we learn to make peace with life, we will find that the dream of perfection, in the end, is just a very ordinary everyday. All we need is to truly give and feel love, and that is the meaning of life.

At the end of his life, Morrie gave fourteen lessons to his student Mitch, and each lesson was worth recalling and thinking about.

The most important part he didn't say but he did was that there was no such thing as "too late" in life, and he was still changing himself until the day he said goodbye.

None of us can erase the life we've lived, nor can we live it again, but we can try to change ourselves from now on.

tuesday with morrie英文读后感(tuesdays with morrie英文读后感)

If you are a little unhappy, a little depressed, a little anxious right now, read this book and you will find the answers you need to be happy.

My speech is over, thanks for your listening!
